In times past the best way to get your news out was to mail or fax a copy of your press release to every newspaper office you could find the address and phone number for. But the Internet makes distributing your press releases much easier and more effective. One broadcast email can get your release in the hands of news desk editors in an instant. Or use a press release news wire service and extend your reach to the world.

How Can I Capture PC Screen Contents?

by Gabe Goldberg

It’s often desirable or necessary to capture — that is, record into a file — what’s on your Windows screen. Windows has two basic tools for this: the Print Screen (or PrtScreen or some other variant) key captures the contents of your entire Windows desktop onto the Windows Clipboard; pressing Alt and PrintScreen captures only the active program window. Sometimes one of these choices is exactly what you need.

For some baffling and extremely frustrating reason, Windows Media Player is the only major Windows application that does not have a “Help” button or any clue how to get help. You have to search Google or subscribe to Tiplet’s RSS feed to learn that help is available simply by pressing the F1 key.

How Can I Get Free or Low Cost VoIP?

by Tina Gasperson

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It’s a relatively new protocol for telephone communications that uses the Internet and your broadband connection to facilitate phone calls. VOIP has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years, and the reliability and quality of connections has improved proportionately. To use it, all you need is a reliable and fast internet connection, a VOIP phone or a microphone-equipped headset, and an account with a VOIP provider. You can even get free VOIP phone calls, depending on which service provider you choose to use. Most VOIP service providers allow you to call others in the same network for free, but change for calls outside the network.

Where Can I Sell My Handmade Goods Online?

by Tina Gasperson

Maybe it’s the economy, maybe it’s the environment, or maybe it’s just that people recognize the value and beauty of an item that has been lovingly handcrafted by an actual person and not a machine. Whatever the reasons, handmade is in. If you’ve always been a crafter looking for an audience, now is your time to shine. Your audience is waiting, on the Internet.

There have always been places to sell online, but you don’t want your hand-sewn doll clothes, hand-knitted scarves, or hand-carved jewelry boxes to get lost in the jungle of miscellaneous merchandise on places such as eBay and Craigslist. Instead, look for one of the sites set up specifically to cater to artists and crafters like you, and those who appreciate you.

So you used Windows Media Player to “rip” music from an Audio CD to your hard drive. You need MP3 files in both cases.

What to Do If You’ve Lost the Manual for a Gadget or Device

by Gabe Goldberg

Unless you’re a compulsive packrat — and can prove it with multiple neatly organized file cabinets — you’ll eventually find that a gadget or appliance has separated from its operating instructions. And unless it’s something brick-simple with just On/Off buttons, or you’ve memorized its every esoteric function, you’ll be baffled and frustrated.

Even worse, many products now come with one-page pictures-only “Quick Start” instructions showing how to plug them in or insert batteries, turn them on, and not much else. Perhaps a real manual was delivered on a now-missing CD or a now-forgotten Web URL was given as a clue for help.

Don’t despair! Many manufacturers offer full manuals on their Web sites, easily located and perused online or downloaded for printing or offline reference.
