Where Can I Sell My Handmade Goods Online?

by Tina Gasperson

Maybe it’s the economy, maybe it’s the environment, or maybe it’s just that people recognize the value and beauty of an item that has been lovingly handcrafted by an actual person and not a machine. Whatever the reasons, handmade is in. If you’ve always been a crafter looking for an audience, now is your time to shine. Your audience is waiting, on the Internet.

There have always been places to sell online, but you don’t want your hand-sewn doll clothes, hand-knitted scarves, or hand-carved jewelry boxes to get lost in the jungle of miscellaneous merchandise on places such as eBay and Craigslist. Instead, look for one of the sites set up specifically to cater to artists and crafters like you, and those who appreciate you.

What to Do If You’ve Lost the Manual for a Gadget or Device

by Gabe Goldberg

Unless you’re a compulsive packrat — and can prove it with multiple neatly organized file cabinets — you’ll eventually find that a gadget or appliance has separated from its operating instructions. And unless it’s something brick-simple with just On/Off buttons, or you’ve memorized its every esoteric function, you’ll be baffled and frustrated.

Even worse, many products now come with one-page pictures-only “Quick Start” instructions showing how to plug them in or insert batteries, turn them on, and not much else. Perhaps a real manual was delivered on a now-missing CD or a now-forgotten Web URL was given as a clue for help.

Don’t despair! Many manufacturers offer full manuals on their Web sites, easily located and perused online or downloaded for printing or offline reference.

How Can I Find Out What Information About Me Is Posted Online, and Can I Remove It?

Have you ever “Googled” someone? It’s easy. Just visit your favorite search engine, such as Google.com, and type their first and last names into the search box, preferable encased in quotation marks in order to exclude pages that happen to have the first and last name in some other order. In a matter of seconds, you have a list of links to pages that include your friend’s name. If your friend has an uncommon name, you can be pretty sure you’ve got the right person. Now imagine your friend Googling you. If the thought of that makes you nervous, maybe you’d better Google yourself and see just what’s out there. You may be surprised to find that 10-year-old discussion forum post you made is still lingering online, even though you’ve moved on to completely different things.

What Is SEO and How Can It Help Me?

by Tina Gasperson

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and it is a method of keyword placement and Web site coding structure that is designed to make a site appear higher in search engine results. For example, if I have a site about German Short-Haired Pointers and I apply SEO tactics correctly, when someone searches for German Short-Haired Pointers on Google my site should come up on the first page, and ideally at the very top of the results. Sites that are at the top of search results get more visits, and in the world of Internet commerce, Web sites that get more visits make more money.

What Is the Difference Between MySpace and Facebook?

Your friends finally talked you into getting a Myspace account, and you dutifully learned how to “pimp your page,” posed for Myspace photos with puckered grins, and checked in each day to see who left you a comment. Just when you felt like you had it all down, now your friends are telling you to come on over to Facebook and do it all again. If “why?” is the first question that comes to mind, rest assured that there are differences between Myspace and Facebook that are worth taking a look at. You may find that you want to try having an account at both sites, or you may realize that one really is enough.

There are many reasons you might want to check the browsing history on your computer – perhaps you remember finding the perfect crème brulee recipe last week but you forgot to bookmark it, or maybe you just need to check up on your teenage daughter to make sure she really was researching her latest school project online and not watching reruns of Family Guy the whole time. How to Move Your WordPress Blog to a New Host, Using Fantastico and phpMyAdmin

by Tina Gasperson

There are many reasons to switch Web hosting companies: prolonged or repeated outages, poor customer service, or maybe you just found a better deal. However, if you have a well-established WordPress blog you might find as many reasons to procrastinate on moving your site. You don’t want to start over again with the content, comments, and registered users it took so long to amass. Moving WordPress isn’t impossible, though, and as long as you take your time and follow the necessary steps, it isn’t all that difficult.

How Can I Tweak Firefox and Thunderbird to Be as Great as People Say They Are?

by Gabe Goldberg

One of the Internet’s many beauties is the diversity of choices available — for everything. There are multiple search engines, Web browsers, ISPs (Internet service providers), operating systems (Windows, Linux, Mac). This means that no two people have precisely the same computing setup or online experience, which leads to hours of fun-filled arguments about whose choices are best.

In fact, competition works to everyone’s advantage: No matter what your choice is for a given function, the vendor or manufacturer knows that you have alternatives and must hustle to keep your loyalty. The “browser wars” — first when Microsoft pushed Internet Explorer (IE) development to catch innovator Netscape and more recently with Mozilla Firefox stealing market share back from IE (and, of course, with contributions from Opera, Google’s Chrome, and other contenders) — have generated beneficial innovation and evolution.
